The most goals scored in a single FIFA Club World Cup match by an individual is three, achieved by Luis Suárez (Uruguay) for Barcelona against Guangzhou Evergrande on 17 December 2015; Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) for Real Madrid against Kashima Antlers on 18 December 2016; and Gareth Bale (UK) for Real Madrid against Kashima Antlers on 19 December 2018.

Ronaldo is to date the only player to record a hat-trick in the final of the Club World Cup. In the precursor to the World Club Cup, the Intercontinental Cup (1960–2004), only one player recorded three goals in the same match: Pelé. His effort came in 1962 when Santos defeated Benfica 5–2 in Lisbon.

The current rules for a tie-breaker, is that if there is a tie for the most number of goals in the tournament, the award goes to the player who has given the most assists (as decided by the FIFA Technical Study Group). If there is still more than one player, the tie-breaker goes to the player who has played the least amount of time. Goals scored from penalty shoot-outs are not counted.
