Football squares, also known as a football pool or football boxes, is a way of placing bets for a group of people using a basic X-Y axis (remember algebra?) There’s actually a decent chance that last year’s Super Bowl party was the last big gathering you attended. While hosting a Super Bowl party this year may not be recommended (unless you do so safely), there are still plenty of ways to make the viewing experience a fun one.

The most popular way to play Super Bowl Squares is by using a 10×10 grid. You can simply draw your own on a sheet of paper, or download and print our very own Super Bowl Squares template below!
Once you have your grid, assign one team to the X-axis and the other to the Y-axis. In other words, put one team’s name next to the columns and the other next to the rows. It doesn’t matter which team you put on which side. Each column and row will be numbered 0-9. You can simply fill out both sides of the sheet in order, or you can randomize the numbers.
The next step is to get people to fill out your board. The best way to do this is to have people choose their squares before the number values are assigned. This way there is no strategy involved, which keeps the game fair for all players. If you have already filled the numbers in, be sure to hide the values from those choosing their squares. The grid includes 100 spaces, and the best way to play is to give every player in the game the same number of squares. This way, everyone has an equal chance to win.
Of course, there is money involved.The cost of each square depends on how much of a prize pool you want to payout. You can charge each player $1 per square, $5 per square, or more. It’s all up to you. Winners in this game are determined after each quarter of the Super Bowl.
Winners are determined based on the score of the game after each quarter. The last digit in the score for either team determines the victor. For example, let’s say the Bucs lead the Chiefs 10-7 after the first quarter of the game. The player whose square falls on the “0” for the Bucs’ side and the “7” for the Chiefs’ side is the winner for that quarter.
The amount of the payout in each quarter depends on how much you want to pay. The typical rule of thumb is to have the winner at the end of the first, second, and third quarters each receive 20% of the total prize pool. The winner at the end of the game will receive 40% of the prize pool. Or, you can always distribute 25% of the winner of each quarter.

While the aforementioned method is the most common way to play, it’s far from the only way to do so. Below are a few of the different types of Super Bowl Squares games you can play instead of the classic version.
10-Line Super Bowl Squares
The 10-line version of the game is different in that every player in the game will have just one number per square. Instead of taking the scores at the end of each quarter for each team, the winner in this game is determined by adding the scores of both teams together at the end of each quarter. So, using our aforementioned example, the player with the square number 17 will win if the teams have to score 17 points at the end of the quarter.

25-Line Super Bowl Squares
The 25-line game is similar to the 10-line version. The main difference is that each player’s chances of winning are improved. The 25-line game is the better option if you don’t have quite as many players in the game. Each square contains two numbers. It’s essentially just a condensed version of the standard Super Bowl Squares game.

50-Line Super Bowl Squares
The 50-line game is another option if you don’t have too many players playing the game. Each square will include one number from Team A and two numbers from Team B. This is another way to increase each player’s chances of winning, and it follows the same quarter-by-quarter formats as the other variations.

How to Choose a Super Bowl Squares Template
In most cases, the version of the game you choose depends on the number of people involved in the game. If you’re participating in a huge game with upwards of 100 people, the standard 100-square, 10×10 game is likely the best choice. This game can hold up to 100 people, which makes it harder to win.
If you don’t have quite as many people playing, going with the smaller 10-line, 25-line, or 10-line versions makes plenty of sense. The 10×10 grid is also a logical choice if you’re playing the game for higher stakes. The most common football pool is the standard 100 square football pool. At almost every Super Bowl party you have ever been to you might have seen this 10 x 10 betting sheet and wondered what it is. There’s nothing like a friendly little game to liven up the party during the Super Bowl. This pool is built around a simple chart calls for no skill or previous knowledge of how to bet the spread or of the game of football in general. In this article I will explain how easy this to partake in and how much fun this form of gambling on football can add to the game.
How Do Gambling Squares Work
How a 100 square football pool works is very simple. Whoever the party host or pool host may be creates at 10 squares by 10 squares chart; this is numbered on each axis from 0-9. Each axis is also labeled home/away or by each team playing, if chosen.
The pool host will then try to sell each square on the chart, usually ranging from $5-$100, depending on the type of clientele buying the squares. After all the squares have been sold, each box is then assigned at random so that everyone has a fair chance to get a coveted square. Another method some pool hosts use is to have all the entrants write their names down inside a single square of their liking on the blank 100 square pool sheet and then use 10 cards (Ace through Nine) to randomly draw the numbers at the top and side of the pool sheet.
How do you know which squares are the best? This is simple, so the way this works is that every square on the board will assign two numbers. For instance, if you had a square in the middle of the board, this would correspond to 5 for the home team and 5 for the away team. So what do those 5’s mean?
The numbers 0-9 correspond to either the last number in the home or away team score depending on where the square is located. So 20 points would be a 0 whereas 35 would be 5 points.

So how do you win? At the end of the first quarter, halftime, third quarter, and final score whatever the score is will be awarded to the person who owns that square. If the score is 17-10 at the half with the home team winning, the person with the squares of 7 and 0 would win that portion of the game. Having the squares 0 and 7 would not help because it would be assigned to the wrong teams. Usually the total money is divided by 5, and is paid out as follows. 1st quarter, Halftime, and 3rd quarter all get a 1/5 of the total bank and the Final Score doubles this to 2/5. So if you were involved on a $5 dollar pool and all 100 squares were filled that would be $500 to be paid out. With that number you would get paid $200 for final score and $100 for all other scores.
