Bets Offered
FanDuel offers a plethora of contests, offering experimental contests, beat the score contests, and a variety of free contests.
FanDuel offers users an array of contests to choose from or create. Users have the option of joining or creating public or private contests, ranging from head-to-head showdowns to contests with an unlimited number of entrants. Users can also enter daily contests against complete strangers or compete against friends all season by creating a league.
FanDuel’s contests allot users $60,000 to draft their team, regardless of the sport. Users then draft a team, usually between six and nine players, each with their own price tag. Individual sports such as golf allow you to select the six golfers you think will perform best, while for sports such as football you are required to fill a roster with various positions. The typical NFL football lineup has 1QB, 2RB, 3WR, 1TE, 1FLEX, and 1DEF.
Contest Types
FanDuel currently has the following contest types: tournaments, beat the score, multipliers, head to heads, 3-100 player, 50/50s, and beginner contests. Recently FanDuel added personalized elements to each user’s homepage, so contest styles and sports that were previously wagered on are more likely to reappear. FanDuel offers contests that range from free all the way up to $50,000. The biggest contest I saw had an entry fee of $26,000.
Anyone new to DFS should play beginner contests until they reach a tier on which they are no longer allowed to do so. Beginner contests allow new users to play with a pool of beginners, therefore increasing the chances they win a contest.
Beat the Score
Beat the score is one of FanDuel’s newest contests, in which users must hit a target score to win money. Payouts are split between everyone who hits the target score, and different contests have different scores to beat, with varying levels of difficulty and payouts. Currently, beat the score is available only for the NBA, NHL, EPL, and PGA. This contest mode is aimed at recreational users, as opposed to professionals.
Labs
FanDuel is also experimenting with “Labs” contests, which are open to users for a limited time. For example, a “QuickPick 4X4” MLB labs contest consisted of users picking one pitcher and one hitter from four different pitching and hitting tiers.
A “Positionless” NBA labs contest consisted of users picking eight NBA players, regardless of position for their roster, breaking the traditional format of picking a lineup by position. Labs contests are an innovative and fun way to keep contests fresh and exciting for all users.
FanDuel offers contests that are sponsored by themselves, or a third-party company. These free contests are fun and truly free, not requiring any minimum weekly spending.
For the 2018 NFL season, FanDuel is offering Gridiron Pick’em, where users choose the winner of Sunday’s games for a chance of winning a $10,000 prize, and Survivor, where users pick one winner each week for a chance of winning or sharing a $250,000 prize.
Odds
While DraftKings posts the variable rate of commissions they charge, FanDuel, unfortunately, does not, forcing me to compute the rates manually. I found FanDuel charged similar commissions as DraftKings, with a variable range of 5.66%-16.50%, depending on the contest size, entry fee, and number of entrants. Banking with FanDuel is simple. The company currently allows players to deposit and withdraw money via debit/credit card and PayPal.

The only drawback of the app, as opposed to DraftKings’ mobile app, is the opportunity to create lineups from a mobile device and import them from a desktop version. While DraftKings lets users create lineups that aren’t entered into contests, FanDuel does not have this option. Users can modify lineups for entered contests on FanDuel’s app; they just can’t create lineups for a queue to use later.
FanDuel Scout
FanDuel Scout is an additional app offered by FanDuel that provides personalized news for the NFL, NBA, and MLB. The app allows you to receive automatic notifications about players in your lineups, important player news from around the league, upcoming game analysis, and a personalized watchlist of players you decide to keep tabs on. The app syncs to the FanDuel app to sync your existing player watch list. You can also manually add or remove players to this watch list.
Automatic lineup notifications are useful, especially during the NFL season when players often wait until a few hours before game time to declare whether they are playing. Being able to track players you are interested in makes scouting that much easier. The app provides a lot of articles for each sport as well, offering projections, recaps, and general DFS news.
My only criticism of FanDuel’s Scout is the same I had with DraftKings’s DK Live: they’re both separate apps from the main app to which they are linked. I understand why two apps are necessary, but it is still a minor nuisance. Regardless, both separate apps offer quality content and give the end user a better experience.
Education and Research
FanDuel does a good job arming users with industry coverage and lineup tools.
FanDuel offers new users guides for each of the sports they offer. These guides contain some general tips and strategies on how to do better in DFS.
While the information is presented in a clean and visually pleasing manner, it is very basic. These tips and strategies are things most users intuitively know, such as draft players going up against poor defenses, or looking for value players filling in for injured starters. While there is some quality information, users will need to conduct more research on general strategy before laying down their money.
Player Data
When drafting a lineup, you can select players to view their recent performance, news linked to them, and current stats. FanDuel provides a much clearer view of this data, while DraftKings offers an extra data point or two. Below is what typical player data look like on FanDuel.
The Duel was launched when I started this review, so I hope to see more content offered in the coming months. The platform is currently a fresh way to stay current on the latest in DFS news, especially football.
FanDuel Guru Tool
The guru tool, which is currently only available on the mobile app, walks players through creating a lineup. The tool offers up stud players and value picks, while making recommendations like stacking a quarterback and a wide receiver on the same team. The tool is useful for new players who might not be in tune with Daily Fantasy Sports. Keep in mind when using the tool that it is offered to everyone, making the likelihood of a similar lineup more prevalent.
Customer Service
FanDuel offers email responses within 24 hours and live chat support for general inquiries. The quality of support is good. DraftKings support was slightly faster than the support offered by FanDuel. Both sites had knowledgeable employees. My only complaint about FanDuel’s customer service is the lack of a dedicated phone line.
Reputation
FanDuel has a solid foundation as a Daily Fantasy Sports company, with no real payout or banking issues. The only issues the company has are as follows.
- FanDuel and DraftKings are facing lawsuits for employees participating in contests using nonpublic information. Both sites now have policies that state their employees are not allowed to participate in any public contests on any DFS sites.
- FanDuel and DraftKings have also faced scrutiny for false/misleading advertising. This relates to the companies making it seem easier for a novice player to win money than it actually is.
- Less than 25% of active FanDuel users are net winners/breakeven for the past 30 days. This dramatic range of winners and losers can be attributed to professionals entering multiple lineups based on algorithms and data that highlight the best users.
- FanDuel posts what percentages of its users are winners in the past 30 days in links all over its website. All DFS users should be aware of the limited chances of winning public contests on all DFS sites.

Final Thoughts
While FanDuel trails slightly behind DraftKings in total sports offered and education, it shines for its ease of use and offering of free and unique contests, making it a solid option for all Daily Fantasy Sports players.
